As we were brainstorming, we realized there were so many we would have to do several episodes on idioms. We decided to start with 5 in English &#8211; how to best communicate those ideas in Spanish and then we took 5 in Spanish that you might hear and explained their meanings! Hoy tenemos un episodio un poco diferente vamos a hablar de modismos en ingl\u00e9s y en espa\u00f1ol. Yuri, \u00bfquieres contarnos c\u00f3mo sali\u00f3 esta idea?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>Pues, esta idea surgi\u00f3 porque estaba viendo un TikTok donde vi&#8230;estaban hablando sobre &#8220;idiom&#8221; y dec\u00eda que&#8230; dijeron uno que se me hizo muy interesante\u2026 el de &#8220;green eyed monster&#8221; y pues quer\u00eda saber qu\u00e9 significado ten\u00eda o como lo utilizaban y se lo pregunt\u00e9 y entonces\u2026 este\u2026 dijimos que ser\u00eda buena idea hacer uno de todos los que hay en espa\u00f1ol y c\u00f3mo lo pueden utilizar en su vida diaria. O si lo han escuchado antes y no sab\u00edan cu\u00e1l es el significado.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy: <\/strong>Hemos escogido cinco modismos en ingl\u00e9s y cinco en espa\u00f1ol en este episodio de hoy, \u00bfverdad? S\u00ed. Okay. Empezamos con el de &#8220;green-eyed monster&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>&nbsp;S\u00ed, que se me hace muy, muy curioso.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy: <\/strong>La verdad es que es un poco curioso, \u00bfno? Pues para m\u00ed, &#8220;green-eyed monster&#8221; es tener envidia o tener celos de alguien de querer algo que otra persona tiene.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>Otro que tambi\u00e9n, este, lo he escuchado pero no, no sab\u00eda c\u00f3mo&#8230; el contexto m\u00e1s bien porque como apenas pas\u00f3 lo de Thanksgiving, digo tal vez es algo que solo se usa en Thanksgiving..el de &#8220;talk turkey&#8221;.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy: <\/strong>S\u00ed, t\u00fa me preguntaste de ese y yo no lo conoc\u00eda, &#8220;talk turkey&#8221;. No lo conoc\u00eda as\u00ed es algo que yo no uso y no he escuchado en mi grupo de amigos o en mi familia pero t\u00fa me dijiste que lo buscaste en Internet y que quiere decir&#8230; pues t\u00fa dices \u201cir al grano\u201d en espa\u00f1ol, \u00bfno? como\u2026 decir la verdad.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>\u00bfDecir algo directo sin tantos rodeos? \u00bfPodr\u00eda ser?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy: <\/strong>S\u00ed, s\u00ed me gusta eso. S\u00ed, decir algo, aj\u00e1, directo no pintarlo bonito y evitar lo que quieres decir, pero decir exactamente lo que quieres decir. \u00bfverdad?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>S\u00ed creo que s\u00ed.<br><br><strong>Amy: <\/strong>&nbsp;Otro que me preguntaste fue de la palabra &#8220;punchline&#8221;. Yo lo trat\u00e9 de explicar como la parte de una broma, la \u00faltima parte de una broma que es como la \u00faltima l\u00ednea o la l\u00ednea final de la broma que es lo que hace que la gente se r\u00eda \u00bfno? Eso se llama el &#8220;punchline&#8221; no s\u00e9 si eso existe en espa\u00f1ol.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>No estoy segura pero creo que no. No s\u00e9 en este momento no me acuerdo pero yo\u2026 No s\u00e9. Creo que no. \u00bfUsted lo ha escuchado en espa\u00f1ol?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy: <\/strong>No, no puedo pensar en algo similar en espa\u00f1ol en este momento tampoco. OK, ya tenemos tres en ingl\u00e9s. \u00bfHay otros m\u00e1s?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>S\u00ed el de &#8220;throw in the towel&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy: <\/strong>Ser\u00eda igual, \u00bfno?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>S\u00ed, \u00bfverdad? \u00bfTirar la toalla?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy: <\/strong>Es como rendirse o dejar de esforzarse.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>\u00bftiene el mismo significado en ingl\u00e9s?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy: <\/strong>S\u00ed, tirar la toalla. La \u00fanica diferencia es que en ingl\u00e9s, este, decimos d\u00f3nde tiramos la toalla. &#8220;Throw IN the towel.&#8221; Casi igual.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>S\u00ed muy parecido. Y el siguiente que yo lo utilizo mucho y creo que ha sido el primero que me aprend\u00ed de ingl\u00e9s el de &#8220;piece of cake&#8221;. S\u00faper f\u00e1cil, \u00bfno?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy: <\/strong>S\u00ed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>Bueno y en espa\u00f1ol pues est\u00e1 como tambi\u00e9n parecido bueno, en este caso no es un pastel pero es un pan. Pan comido. Pero es curioso que en ingl\u00e9s es un pastel y aqu\u00ed en espa\u00f1ol es solo es un pan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy:<\/strong> Bueno, pasamos, un poco, a unos modismos en espa\u00f1ol para explicar a la gente. Tenemos uno en espa\u00f1ol que he escuchado es &#8220;poner sal en la herida&#8221;. \u00bfQu\u00e9 quiere decir eso cuando cuando lo utilizamos en espa\u00f1ol?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>Como que cuando est\u00e1s empeorando la situaci\u00f3n y dices algo que todav\u00eda afecta en la situaci\u00f3n en la que est\u00e1s o lo agrava mucho m\u00e1s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy: <\/strong>S\u00ed, tenemos algo similar en ingl\u00e9s. I think we say the same thing en ingl\u00e9s. &#8220;Add salt to the wound&#8221; or I think something like that en ingl\u00e9s. S\u00ed, es muy parecido, s\u00ed bastante.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>\u00bfY tambi\u00e9n quiere significar lo mismo? \u00bfcomo que agravar la situaci\u00f3n?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy:<\/strong> Yo digo que s\u00ed pero tambi\u00e9n es como hacerle da\u00f1o a alguien \u00bfno ? Si le est\u00e1s haciendo da\u00f1o a alguien y ya luego encima le echas sal en la herida o sea que esa persona ya anda mal y t\u00fa le hiciste algo a\u00fan peor encima de lo que ya est\u00e1 sufriendo. \u00bfEs similar?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>S\u00ed podr\u00eda funcionar tambi\u00e9n en esa situaci\u00f3n. \u00bfQu\u00e9 tal la de &#8220;pelos en la lengua&#8221;?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy: <\/strong>S\u00ed muchas veces lo he escuchado pero siempre me ha sonado* medio raro. \u00bfVerdad? \u00bfQu\u00e9 quiere decir cuando alguien dice eso? &#8220;Sin pelos en la lengua&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>&#8230;que le dice las cosas como son. Que no se las va a disfrazar. Si su cabello est\u00e1 feo le va a decir, &#8220;oye hoy amaneciste con un cabello muy feo.&#8221; Podr\u00eda ser as\u00ed. No tiene pelos en la lengua para decir las cosas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy: <\/strong>Y se puede decir como dijiste apenas tambi\u00e9n&#8230; no tiene pelos en la lengua o sin pelos en la lengua, \u00bfverdad?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>S\u00ed, s\u00ed. \u00bfUsted lo ha utilizado antes?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy: <\/strong>No, porque me suena raro porque en mi mente digo, &#8220;pero nadie tiene pelos en la lengua.&#8221; \u00bfno? Es cierto. Nadie. Pero s\u00ed lo he escuchado mucho. Hablando de pelo hablamos de este que es la frase &#8220;tomar el pelo&#8221;.&nbsp; \u00bfQu\u00e9 quiere decir cuando alguien dice &#8220;tomar el pelo&#8221;?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>Pues, cuando alguien se est\u00e1 burlando de alguna situaci\u00f3n o que te dice algo que no es cre\u00edble y como que te est\u00e1 intentando enga\u00f1ar. Como si yo le dijera ahorita, \u00bfqu\u00e9 cree? Ayer me fui a Europa y estuvo s\u00faper fant\u00e1stico y usted me va&#8230;&#8221;no es cierto me est\u00e1s tomando el pelo porque yo s\u00e9 que no fuiste esa Europa ayer.&#8221; Algo as\u00ed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy: <\/strong>Es como, s\u00ed, mentir, enga\u00f1ar. \u00bfverdad?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>S\u00ed, pero mentir y enga\u00f1ar como en una forma de que hasta la otra persona va a saber que no es cierto.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy: <\/strong>Aj\u00e1. Como en forma de, casi broma para re\u00edrse. En ingl\u00e9s tenemos algo similar que es, &#8220;You&#8217;re pulling my leg.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>O sea le jalo la pierna y no el pelo&#8230; y no el pelo es la pierna. \u00bfTambi\u00e9n se utiliza como en el mismo contexto?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy: <\/strong>S\u00ed, okay esto me ha sonado siempre s\u00faper raro tambi\u00e9n&#8230; &#8220;por si las moscas&#8221; \u00bfqu\u00e9 quiere decir &#8220;por si las moscas&#8221;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>&nbsp;&#8220;Por si las dudas.&#8221; Ayer lo utilizaba, \u00bfno? que iba yo a escribir algo&nbsp; y antes de que se me olvidara digo por si las moscas lo voy a escribir. Por si se me olvida. \u00bfno? por si las dudas, se me olvida pues por si las moscas. \u00bfLo hab\u00eda escuchado antes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy: <\/strong>S\u00ed, s\u00ed lo he escuchado y igual me ha parecido muy gracioso. En ingl\u00e9s yo creo que ser\u00eda como &#8220;just in case&#8221;. Por si las moscas&#8230;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>Por si acaso.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy: <\/strong>S\u00ed y mira esta cosa que yo a veces digo que los modismos tienen como de su \u00e9poca, \u00bfno? O sea que hablamos de tomar el pelo y en ingl\u00e9s &#8220;to pull someon\u00e9&#8217;s leg&#8221; es como m\u00e1s entre, como, las personas de mi edad y m\u00e1s y mayores pues y los j\u00f3venes ya no van a decir &#8220;You&#8217;re pulling my leg.&#8221; \u00bfEn M\u00e9xico en espa\u00f1ol es igual o sea es igual o todas las personas dicen &#8220;por si las moscas&#8221; por ejemplo?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>Yo creo que es igual que la mayor\u00eda de las personas a\u00fan lo siguen utilizando. Tal vez haya como que otras palabras que quieran decir lo mismo y que ellas, no s\u00e9, los j\u00f3venes lo van cambiando pero si una persona sea joven o mayor escucha &#8220;por si las moscas&#8221; lo va a entender. Aj\u00e1. \u00bfy entonces usted dice que en ingl\u00e9s como que lo utilizaba m\u00e1s las personas adultas. \u00bfSi alguien de la generaci\u00f3n ya m\u00e1s joven lo llega a escuchar tal vez esa persona no sepa el significado?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy: <\/strong>En algunos de estos, s\u00ed. Por ejemplo en &#8220;You&#8217;re pulling my leg.&#8221; yo creo que, que ser\u00eda como de &#8220;tomar el pelo&#8221;, yo creo que en mi clase donde tengo estudiantes entre 14-18 a\u00f1os, unos s\u00ed van a saber lo que estoy diciendo si lo digo en ingl\u00e9s, pero hay unos que no. Aunque hablen ingl\u00e9s y todo no me van a entender. Es como de otra generaci\u00f3n&#8230; unos modismos as\u00ed. \u00bfQu\u00e9 tal este de &#8220;ponte las pilas&#8221;. \u00bfQu\u00e9 quiere decir &#8220;ponte las pilas&#8221;?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yureni: <\/strong>Pues que agarres m\u00e1s energ\u00eda que te motives a terminar algo si est\u00e1s haciendo algo muy lento, hacerlo m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido. Ponte las pilas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy: <\/strong>S\u00ed como como la pila es como energ\u00eda \u00bfno? S\u00ed, s\u00ed, energ\u00eda.
